Chasing Perfection Online, Falling Short at Work
Why I'm not too fond of social media.
Hello Parents and YoPros,
Gen Z is the first generation to have social media as a central part of their lives from a young age, and while it's changed how they communicate and learn, it has also created challenges, especially when they enter the workforce. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat have built an environment where young people feel immense pressure to present a perfect image of their lives. Constant comparison can lead to issues like anxiety, low self-esteem, and an unrealistic view of what success looks like.
Social media creates pressure and stress
This sense of always needing to measure up to others can make it hard for Gen Z to feel satisfied with where they are in life. Instead of focusing on growth, they're dealing with "FOMO" (Fear of Missing Out) and constantly checking social media to ensure they're not falling behind. In the workplace, this can lead to anxiety about performance and a fear of making mistakes. Unlike previous generations that might have spent more time outdoors or in unstructured play, Gen Z has grown up with technology as their playground, which means they may not have developed the same coping skills or resilience that comes from trial and error in real-world situations.
Struggle with interpersonal communication
One noticeable challenge is in interviews. According to studies, about 39% of employers prefer hiring older candidates over Gen Z because many in this generation struggle with professional cues and social norms. They're not always comfortable with traditional workplace communication or reading body language, which can lead to miscommunication or appearing disengaged during interviews. Some people label this laziness, but it's often more about a lack of exposure to real-life social interactions rather than an unwillingness to work hard.
The good and the bad
This combination of anxiety, comparison, and struggles with face-to-face communication can make it harder for Gen Z to smoothly transition into the workforce. Their experience with social media has created a double-edged sword—while they're tech-savvy and creative, they often need more support when it comes to adapting to workplace norms, focusing on long-term growth, and finding satisfaction outside of the instant validation they've grown accustomed to online.
